Whole Home Reset Case Study

What started as a few sessions to reduce visual clutter, maximise storage and create dedicated zones for living, crafting, and work, evolved into a five-month project to create a calmer, more manageable home - one that feels easier to live in, enjoy and maintain.

The emotional side

Reaching out for any kind of help, be it from friends, family or a professional, can be daunting for anyone, particularly when you are already feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

Inviting someone new into your home to help with something that can feel incredibly personal takes courage and trust. At the beginning of this project, I was essentially a stranger to my client. She could only go on what we’d discussed together during our confidential telephone consultation, the information on my website, and a recommendation she’d received through social media.

The project began with a mixture of emotions, including feelings of embarrassment, shame and guilt. Having her partner at home for support helped her feel more comfortable, and we took every session at a pace that felt manageable for her.

There was no judgement, no pressure and no expectation that everything had to be tackled at once. By breaking the process down into smaller, achievable steps, we gradually began to make progress. Over time, the changes became about so much more than simply reducing clutter.

The decluttering process

The initial few sessions focused on areas of the home that the client used daily, including the hallway, kitchen and living room.

In just a couple of hours, the kitchen surfaces and cupboards had been emptied, cleaned, sorted and reorganised. Items were grouped by function, with cupboards rearranged so that everyday essentials were easier to find and reach.

Unused items were donated to charity, duplicate utensils or kitchenware were removed, and out of date food was discarded.

This same approach was gradually applied throughout the home and across each session. Working room by room, we slowly reduced the visual and practical overwhelm and created simple, functional systems that felt achievable for the client to maintain.

Rather than trying to tackle everything at once, each session built on the last, creating steady, sustainable progress throughout the home.

The outcome

This was very much a collaborative process. We talked, shared ideas and laughed together as we gradually transformed the home into a space that felt right for the client.

She always had her own ideas about how she wanted her home to look and function. My role was to work alongside her, help turn those ideas into reality and provide the practical and emotional support, encouragement and momentum needed to make them happen.

Sometimes that meant making decisions together, sometimes it meant simply having someone there to keep things moving. During one session, we even went shopping together for storage boxes, something the client had found difficult to motivate herself to do alone.

Over the five months, the home evolved from feeling overwhelming and difficult to manage into a calmer, more functional space that reflected how she wanted to live.

Most importantly, the client is delighted with the results. She has chosen to continue with regular support to maintain the systems we’ve created and prevent things from becoming overwhelming again.

Key takeaway

This project is a lovely example of how professional organising isn’t about coming into someone’s home and telling them what to do. It’s about working alongside someone, listening to what they need and helping them achieve the home they want.

Sometimes, having someone alongside you to provide encouragement, momentum and accountability can make the difference between knowing what needs to be done and actually being able to do it.

This photo shows how the client has transformed this room herself, from a space for storing garden equipment, into a comfortable, inviting room to relax and enjoy.

It also demonstrates how much she has learnt throughout our time working together, not only about organising and making the most of her space, but about creating systems and making decisions that work for her. The transformation is hers, and that’s what makes it particularly rewarding.

If your home has become difficult to manage and you don’t know where to start, you don’t have to tackle it all alone.

Whether you need help with one room or feel your whole home needs a reset, I can work alongside you at a pace that feels manageable, without judgement and without pressure.
